So much to talk about, just never enough time.....

Little bird taking shade under big bird.

Oh so cute.

Before he hopped up here, he tried to land on the skid and slid off, it was funny.

The real reason he comes around, a source of water. Smart bird.

Yay!!!! A mission!!!!! Feels good to land in the Mountains. Skids don't need concrete to land.

TruTV came up to do some final shots of me here in L.A. doing my job to tie in with Maui Choppers coming out hopefully in December this year.

My crew! This is one of many ways they PT. They are going to hate me for this shot, but I think they look cool, and so does the ship off in the background. Gives you a good perspective of how neat our base is.

Not the most gorgeous sunset we've had, but a typical how I end my day shot.

How I begin my day, the morning sun overlooks the valley to the west.

Sometimes I hang out on the pad and take in the view for a while.

A morning preflight surprise!!!!!! OMG! I almost fell off the ship when I lowered the cowling as he was not there when I opened it. I had wondered how big the spider was that had made his way through the engine compartment as I tore off thick webs during my preflight. Baby Tarantula?????????

Little Spyder!

The adorable Brownie Girls with myself and their amazing leader Connie Henyan who exposes them to so many wonderful things.

Some love from the Brownies

Living without cell phones and internet all day is actually quite relaxing up here at the helibase. It can sometimes be a little stressful if I know I need to return a call during normal hours since I only have limited time at the end of my work day to make calls and get online. I haven't had much time to do either. Cell phones and computers and other great technology have enhanced all of our lives greatly, but sometimes it's nice to go without for a while and just relax and do the things we did before cell phones and internet. Wow, kids today will never know what that is like. Hahahaha. I remember when I was a kid and the cell phone first came out, it was this huge clunky thing you had to carry around in a big briefcase bag over your shoulder. Wow, times have changed.
It has been a truly great experience being up here in Idyllwild working for Air Resources. It's times like these when I love working for so many different companies which allows me to be exposed to an ever changing flight environment. I learn to adjust to different work ethics, company policies and procedures, different people I have to work with, different helicopters, different missions, and very very different and diverse flight locations. It is always such an amazing experience to be exposed to working for so many great companies.
Having said that, today as I drove from the base to the hotel, we had another truly breathtaking, car stopping sunset as we have been having up here lately with all the cloud cover. The past several nights have been indescribable. Today's sunset prompted me to finally get online and blog. I haven't been taking as many photos as I usually do. I've been simplifying my life up here, not always grabbing at my camera since I have learned to let go of technology at the base. Although, yesterday I had to finally take a photo of this little bird that frequents the ship every afternoon. This leads into another story.......
There is a place up at the base, a very small little space, almost like a time capsule, a pocket of cell service. It's on a rock just below the helipad. I had tried everywhere at the base when I first got up there weeks ago to find signal, to no avail, then one of the guys on the crew told me about the rock. I sat on this rock, and voila, cell signal!!!! If you move a foot off this rock, signal goes away. I don't know what it is about this spot, but I call it the Verizon Rock. It's really not comfortable to sit there all day, but it can be cool. The scenery is gorgeous and the lizards and birds are entertaining. This is where my little bird friend comes into play. Every afternoon this peeping little bird comes to the helicopter. At first I thought, wow, how cool, little bird-big bird! hahaha. This little guy would hop around the machine, taking shade under the belly tank, peeping along, hoping around, every afternoon. I finally got off the rock the other day and watched him closer. I noticed now he isn't there for the helicopter at all. Smart little bird found a drip from the in ground faucet next to the pad. He hops around the ship, being all stealthy, then slips into the hole in the ground for a bit, then comes back up, doing some more hoping and chirping, then back into the hole. It's really entertaining to me. I took some photos.
Also, last Sunday, a Brownie group leader and some mom's along with the Brownies from Corona came up for a visit. It was soooo cool to have them come up. Next time I'm home I am supposed to find my brownie pic and get it over to the girls along with posting it up here! That will be funny.
Okay, it's getting late and I have to catch up on some paperwork I brought with me. More stories to come soon. Have a wonderful week everyone!!!! I will try to remember to get a photo of the rock up soon.

Desiree,

Sure good to hear from you again. Adorable pictures of the Brownies and you. They will remember getting to meet you and seeing your helicopter for the rest of their lives. We're not going to let you forget to post "Desiree the Brownie" picture. Can hardly wait.

Dear Desiree!

My name is Pedro Cruz and I'm a fixed wing pilot!

I've been flying in the portuguese fire season as a back-seater in an Air Tractor AT-802F, from the 1st of July till the 30th of September.

It was my first experience in fire fighting and I fell in love with it!

I had absolutely no idea of what was the fire fighting work but it overwhelmed me!

I saw the Pilot Mag issue in which you appear and I was looking forward to write you as soon as possible!

The portuguese fire fighting companies demand a lot of flight hours to work as a water bombing pilot...

As some of your "partner" pilots say in Pilot Mag, short flight experience pilots have to be patient and perseverant...

Do you agree with that idea?

What's your advice to someone in that situation?

Thank you!

Regards!

Pedro Cruz (pmncruz@gmail.com)

What a grand experience you provided for those little gals. You opened a new world for them, bravo!!
I like your spider. In mythology spiders for the most part are a very good sign. If a spider descends in front of you a sudden guest will appear or money and promotion will follow......
Someday my spider will come haha.
I have a rare day off so I gotta hit it.
One more thing Dez, not related to anything other than the joy of flight, I viewed "Speed & Angels" a doc. about two Navy officers pursuing their childhood dreams of becoming fighter pilots.
One of the pilots, a woman by the name of Meagan is truly an inspirational character. Worth owning!
Enjoy being communicationless for the moment. What a healthy luxury!
Say hi to Pedro & Cisco.

Desiree, You know now that you brought up the brownie pic that none of us are going to let you forget about posting that. :) Pretty amazing that Steve Fossett's plane was found just west of Mammoth. After a year of searching, and the owner of Kitteredge Sports there in Mammoth literally stumbles on the clue that led to finding the plane. Am sorry he went down like that, but am happy that he was finally found.

I love the little girls surrounding you. Great picture. Wow, Brownie uniforms sure have changed since I was a Brownie. The bird, precious! I gotta say, not so jazzed about the spider. I'm feeling a little itchy.

And along with everyone else, I'm looking forward to the Brownie picture (I have one too, shhh). Oh, one more thing. There was a video posted on Youtube of you flying a helicopter. What happened to that one?

I think it's great about TruTV. I can't wait for that one. It seems like forever since you first mentioned it.

richard, thanks! lol. i should be home sometime next week and will dig up that photo. i've got to look for it. i have soooo much stuff at the house to take care of when i get home. i can't wait to have more money one day and hire a personal assistant! hahaha. wishful thinking.

pedro, im gonna email you.

camerapilot, it was cool indeed to meet the girls. gosh, i hope your right about the luck of the spyder. he did rappel off the ship, only after my mechanic made him though. lol.

trevor, wow!!!! amazing! i am glad too that they found him. sad, but now maybe they can piece together what exactly happened. i've been so disconnected from the world up here. even the weather is different up here than just 2 hours from my house. lol. last week a soldier was killed up here riding his motorcycle on the 243. such sad news. he just got back from iraq. i only know of local news up here. thanks again for the news.

terry, funny you mention that. last time i was home i picked up my video camera and wiped the dust off of it. now if i actually fly soon before i leave i will have to figure out how to get the video off this old camera onto the computer since it's tapes. lol. i really want to start posting videos. i may have to use the built in camera video function for now.

connie, thanks! lol. next week i will try to get it up on the site. thanks again for coming up with the girls. looking forward to trying to make it out to a meeting soon.

sharon, i totally agree. we got jipped. lol. our outfits were so not cool. they looked so military foresty uniformy. ugly. lol. the girls had all these cute patches on theirs. connie couldn't find a helicopter patch with a girl so she found a cute bear with goggles and a scarf to put on their vests in light of their recent visit up here. can't wait to see the cute patch she found. that video got pulled since my friend who took it and posted it did not have the permission of corona police to post their ship flying on youtube. bummer. anyway, i too am looking forward to the trutv show.
