This is what we saw when we first arrived in Malibu in the Mountains near Kanan north of Mulholland! Snow all over the mountains, highways, roads, and homes!
Kanan tunnels
We are only at 2000' and look at the snow on Kanan at the tunnels
Wow, what a dramatic difference just popping over the hill from the snow to the beach!
Heading south down PCH away from Malibu
A look back up the coast as we make our way to another story in hollywood
Look how pretty and clear Santa Monica is
The view from News Chopper 4 over a DEA drug bust in hollywood looking towards the Santa Monica Mountains after we left Malibu
Making our way through the valley from Whiteman to West L.A. to put the snow on the news
West L.A., parking lots and ball fields covered in snow, some on the 405 shoulder going south
Homes in Bel Aire, look closely at the white sidewalks, lawns, and roofs of these homes. This is only a few hundred feet above sea level!
Wow, what an amazing day! And to think I almost called in sick! I haven't been feeling well for about 2 weeks, fighting a sore throat and now finally turned into a cold after riding sunday in the cold. Anyway, wow! It was awsome to fly around L.A. today with all the snow everywhere! How cool is that! To top it off what makes it even more fun is we are filming it and bringing it to you in your house on your TV for your viewing pleasure! Stu and I had so much fun seeing all this from above and to be able to fly from snow covered areas to complete sunny areas within seconds. Only in L.A. You gotta love living here! Well, it's late and I'm taking the next two days off to feel better and heading up to Mammoth for the weekend. I will get back to your comments next week. Have a great week everyone!

It's amazing, with all the recent chatter about global warming and here we are seeing snow in Malibu and on the 405.
Am a bit envious Desiree. When I still had my medical one of my favorite times to fly was a day or 2 after a snowstorm blew through. Loved to go up and cruise along the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains.
Enjoy Mammoth. Hope you feel better soon!

Great pics! No wonder the traffic was so horrendous yesterday - I was trying to go from Santa Monica to LACMA and gave up after it took 30 minutes just to get to Barrington.
Get well soon D!
Great pictures. Got similar ones from my flight near SFO the other day. Who would have ever thought.
Had to come here and post a comment that I saw one of your photos on Airliners.net. The VIP Bell 430 with your two blond friends; the Internet has come full circle.
Very nice pictures!!! Thanks for sharing them and I hope you feel better soon !

Echinecea, rest. No playing in the snow.
I came across this article while searching for the recent story about an Oklahoma news chopper pilot who rescued a young deer that couldn't stand up on a frozen lake, by using the helicopter to blow it to the shore.
Man Chases Deer with Helicopter
Associated Press posted: 22 September 2006 11:46 am ET
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Chasing a herd of mule deer with a helicopter might seem less than sporting, but it's also a violation of federal law.
A South Dakota man was sentenced Wednesday to two years of probation for chopper-chasing a herd in a Nebraska national forest.
Troy Link, 34, pleaded guilty to airborne harassment of wildlife.
Witnesses say that in November 2004, they saw the helicopter flying less than 100 feet above the ground, chasing the small herd in the McKelvie National Forest southwest of Valentine.
Using any kind of aircraft to harass or disturb wildlife is a crime punishable in federal court by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $100,000, according to the state attorney general's office.
During his probation, Link, of Huron, S. Dakota, is prohibited from hunting or fishing, and must pay a $5,000 fine.
Link's lawyer argued, unsuccessfully, that if Chopper Chicks from Los Angeles can chase people on dirtbikes, why can't his client chase a few animals.
Alright, I added the last paragraph.
Ski Kanan Tunnels? Not!
Didn't snow anymore in your absence so Mammoth was by far the better choice.
Photo LA was a blast. People Watching was just as fun as looking at the prints! Print prices have tripled since last year. What's up with that?
Attended Capt. Frank Kratzer's Memorial on Saturday. Daily News, 1/21, did a nice right-up. There's an old joke Q: How do you know there is a pilot at the party?
A: He'll tell you.
Capt. Frank was not like that. What a great, kind & giving man.
Everybody be safe and mind the little stuff.
See you in the skies!:)
Hi Laguna,
You said that print prices had tripled since last year. Could it be that they have gone to giclee printing? I never heard of the word until last week, but I read an article somewhere that said painters and photographers are now using special expensive inkjet printers that produce superior, but costly prints. Lots of stuff on the Internet about it. Here is one article: giclee
Richard, interesting info. Thanks! When it comes to the digital print I'm sure that "Giclee" will add to the cost when compared to a conventional digital print because of enhanced quality.
Late last year we had a seminar at the Pasadena Art Center of Design and we talked about the "Silver Print" and the "Digital Print" and the evolution of the digital age and it's impact on the use of film and the handmade darkroom print. Some said that film might be doomed while others said that because of a new generation of photographers who have only been exposed to digital the mystery of the silver print might actually cause new photographers to carry on in the footsteps of the masters. All in all by the end of 3 days of talks we decided it was "All Good!" Each medium will only enhance the other...
As for the jump in price of the Silver prints I can only surmise that the likes of Bresson, Man Ray, Kertesz and all the others is that the images that these individuals created are becoming scarce and scarcity equals increased value.
Nothing like holding a real silver print in your hand. You immediately notice the difference.
Laguna, very interesting post about digital vs film. Thanks.
trevor, thanks, and i feel much better.
acidhelmnun, thanks!
kristian hvass, yeah, who would have thought.
jimbo, thanks and thanks!
captain36, i played in the snow, felt bad, but got better faster than i normally do. strange. maybe the altitude squeezed it out of me. thanks.
richard, had already seen the news clip, sent it to everyone i know. was really cool. thanks! by the way, never heard from bryan at people mag. i emailed him. hmm?
laguna, true about the pilot at a party usually. interesting about the print prices.
I'm curious why the TV 4 helicopter is a plain white and there is no paint scheme for it like it's predecessors:

At some point you ought to think about moving into EMS. Don't go with VFR, or single-engine programs. If you don't have an instrument rating or much instrument time, get some. Of course you can pass this off as the ramblings of some old helicopter pilot...
Really good luck and fly safely...
