Those of you who grew up in the valley........
Those of you that grew up here in the San Fernando Valley at some point during high school hung out at "The Tower" on old dirt Mulholland up in the Santa Monica Mountains. You either went there to get high, drink, stare at the stars, enjoy the amazing view of the city at night, and/or just went up there purely for the adventure of the drive up on the old dirt road. I personally liked the drive up there, especially after it had rained. Aaaaahhh, the joy of driving my 1982 CJ 5 on that slippery muddy huge road blocking lake sized puddled highway! The tower was a great place to venture to with friends. I recall getting a ticket and having to go to court for something I did up there involving driving my jeep off Mulholland highway to go 4wheeln' on apparently ground I was not supposed to be on. Yeah, it had rained that night too and my friends and I were forced to sit in the mud next to the Jeep while being interrogated. It was worth it though. We had fun. Well, the point of this story is that today after flying over a couple of typical news stories the assignment desk sent us to go look for a replica of the "Great Wall of China" movie set being built in the Santa Monica Mountains. Sure enough, the wall is right behind that tower! We shot some video, flew low and had a great time checking it out. All the while I remembered the days back at the tower. If only I knew then that some day I would be flying a helicopter around that tower! Amazing! Anyway, you can hike up to the great wall set. There is security there but we saw people walking by it. It's on a fire road/hiking trail behind the tower off Mulholland. Check it out if you have time and are curious.
Later that night we flew on a wild pursuit that ripped through the streets of East Los Angeles. When the pursuit came to an end atop a parking structure, the suspect bailed on foot and without any hesitation ran towards the end of the structure and jumped over the short wall and off the two story structure into a parking lot below! With minor injuries, which appeared to be his ankle, he continued to try and run from police. Ground units rolled in and got him in the end as they always do.
It was a wild and exciting chase for us news helicopters overhead and the 2 lapd birds below us. As Stu(the cameraman) and I were making our way back to Whiteman, he said can you believe we get paid to do this? It's a joke! We have fun and this is not work. Work is something hard, something you don't look forward to but have to do. What we do is fun and exciting. We laughed about it all the way back to Whiteman.

Fun getting paid watching some of the strangest things unfold infront of you isn't it!!!!?? I think if you had looked hard enough Dez as you hovered over that set you might have seen that teenage girl again, leaning her back against the jeep, trying not to snicker and trying to look serious for the cop.
Fun & gentle moments when you can look back, see yourself then and seeing yourself now.
Wow, what I'd give for a job that I actually loved going to every day. Can't even imagine. It must be an extraordinary feeling to do something you love and consider fun AND get paid for it to boot. I tip my hat to you!
Laguna, We do see some wild and crazy and amazing things up here. It's really an amazing thing to get to experience on a daily basis. Oh, I was scared that night with the cop. I thought he was going to impound my jeep. Luckily he let us go after giving us the typical scare. I still had a ticket and had to go to court. But I do remember being a little scared, although up to that point we were having soooo much fun!
Spygirl, trust me, sometimes it can feel like work. I have to remind myself how cool this job is at times. But there are days when if you take something you love to do and do it every day, it can feel forced and feel like work. I am very lucky though. I appreciate everything I have and that I can come to work and fly this amazing flying machine through the sky and see wonderful things daily. I am truly lucky!
At the end of the KNBC4 11 p.m. news tonight, they showed the "Great Wall." I presume it was what you and your cameraman taped. But Chuck Henry said that filming of the movie had been completed, and the wall has already been torn down. :(
Enjoyed hearing about your "criminal past" in your Jeep.
Stu speaks the truth.
Richard, that's strange! I can't believe they tore it down that fast. That day we filmed it they were still building it. Guess they tear them down as quick as they put them up. Well, it was on a fire road, can't leave it there permanently.
Michaelc, Stu does for sure! I love working with Stu. He's half of the reason I love my job. You gotta enjoy the people you work with. They are what make your day and your job fun!
Growing up in the valley...whoa!!! I remember all too well. My/our spot was north of Mulholland near Laurel Canyon. The 'rainforest' where our 'criminal' past (trespassing...lol) caught us too. Worst thing to happen there was a kid jumped on to a firehose (that had been there for probably an eon) that was attached to a tree above a gully. It snapped...Ambulance and police. Needless to say, bad afternoon.
I do hear Spygirl. I love (loved...WB is really corporate) going to my job. I love what I do...been doing it since high school and at 41 not one regret. Still fun regardless of politics. Keep it up Des and keep the faith.
BTW, I'm a virgin to your site. I kinda remember you from channel 5 and heard that name tonight when they (NBC) showed a fire...hate seeing homes go down...tonight and I HAD to see "why does that name seem familiar?
Take care.
